This week was crazy busy. I finished my big push and was able to get everything done. I made some new things for my shop, (soon to be listed) my good twitter buddy, @nycvictory told me I should stock up my store a little more. I am taking her advice. She has tons of pretty things in her shop, check her out at: https://www.etsy.com/shop/customcreative
The best news this week was my first sale since reopening my shop! It is amazing the boost in self-esteem a sale will give you. I shipped these pretties to a customer along with a little surprise.
I am also participating in a large consignment sale this weekend. There was quite a bit of bagging and tagging going on. Plus making sure everything was clean and free of stains. For an extra challenge the power went out on me while I was doing all of this. Good thing I have plenty of candles! I am pretty tired though. Working by candlelight is not the best working environment. I am hoping to make some good pocket change for my items. I am planning a Disneyland trip and am saving up so I can afford everything we want to do while visiting.
This weekend will consist of soccer and crafting. I am hoping to get some miscellaneous painting done this weekend. And I have some linens I want to dye or fade, I haven’t decided yet. I also have a new muumuu and am tossing around ideas for an upcycle project.
Tomorrow is October already! What?!? Everything is happening too fast. I feel like someone hit the hyper speed button and I’m trying not to panic. I received my Square in the mail last week, started looking around for Holiday boutiques I can sell my creations at and am trying to ramp up making things to sell. I made a list of things I want to sell and have a list of things to buy. Hobby Lobby here I come!
It is kinda scary trying to balance everything. I still have a day job, I still have kids with hungry mouths, I still have a messy house…but I have added to the equation by trying to focus more of my spare time on making a business out of creating. My goal right now is to take my youngest to Disneyland for his birthday. I figure that is an attainable goal. I am not quitting my day job any time soon. I have been tweeting more and networking more and it is starting to pay off. I just need to get my blogging down.
So off I go again. I need to finish up at work then hit Hobby Lobby for some supplies. I think I will start my dishwasher as soon as I get home and get dinner started right away in the hopes of settling down with my projects before bed. I am excited for what is to come and realize that I can make it happen, I just need to “keep swimming” [Disney’s Nemo reference]
I have decided to take my craftiness to the next level. I am going to sell some of my handmade and thirfted items at Holiday Bazaars this year. I have gone online and ordered the Square reader. It says it should be here in 7-10 days. I set up my tax and banking information and then became super giddy thinking about taking my first credit card sale. Then I woke up this morning…
The realization of how huge a commitment this is hit me. I need to make patterns, choose fabric, cut fabric, sew, label, sand, paint, and order business cards. Whew. Now I feel a little overwhelmed!
I just need to remind myself that everything doesn’t have to be perfect. I am hoping that the Square reader works well. It was super easy to set up. I put my county tax rate in and it automatically adds it to the cost of my items. I put my checking account in and that is where the money will get deposited, (in 1-2 days). Even the fees are easy. You can pay monthly or pay 2.75% of every transaction, not bad!
I am pretty excited and nervous to find out how this adventure will go. I keep telling myself not to be afraid, to make the jump. Reminding myself that I have nothing to lose. And so here goes the commitment. Phew. Scary!
First off I would like to say sorry I am so bad at blogging. I think I tried to do a post everyday and that was a bit much for me and my busy lifestyle. Then a high school graduation happened, then a long road trip, then keeping up my eBay store and on and on. I know, I know, everyone is busy. I just think I needed to figure out how to recharge and keep from burning out. So, I have decided that for now I am not going to try to post just to post. There. I feel better now. On to the next thing, because I have not stopped upcycling, redoing and crafting…
Part 2 of my muumuu upcycle. So wayyyyy back when I first started writing I posted about a muumuu I found at the thrift shop. I still have tons of fabric left over and I had some jeans that I no longer felt comfortable wearing in public so I thought I would try my hand at embroidery and patching them. I love how they turned out! And it was so easy to do. Just a little time consuming. The bird was probably the toughest because of the shape. This was a two evening project in front of the tv. easy peasy.
First, I apologize for not posting. Pinterest changed the way they share links and I have yet to adapt. I have about 5 posts “pending” me correctly linking them. Sigh. Oh well, brain exercise is good for me.
On to the Freecycle news! A few weeks ago I was the lucky recipient of Betty’s fabric castaways. Oh how giddy I was! Most of it was holiday print but still, free is free! Betty said her mother had passed on and she was cleaning out her fabric stash. She said she would keep my number and call me when she had more.
Betty called me yesterday and I met up with her. She had a bag of zippers and lace bindings. Spools of thread and sewing machine needles. Of course a box of fabric was waiting for me. This time full of knits, cotton prints and velour. I am so excited! The funny thing is that I was having a bad day yesterday. I started sketching out some tote bag designs and she called. Perfect timing! What a wonderful way to turn my day around.
Do you Freecycle? Anyone else get something amazing on Freecycle? I saw a post requesting a serger. I think if you could get one of those for free, well, THAT would be amazing!
I am so happy that it is Friday! This week flew by and I am hoping to get some much needed cleaning out of the way. I am also looking forward to memorizing some basic code for my site. I had so many great posts but was unable to get my content to show up properly. I was able to update a new page: my blogroll! Here you will find the blogs I enjoying reading on a daily basis. A good blog can really make my day.
Sometime this weekend I am hoping to take time to go to the beach. We live close to Santa Cruz. Here is a snapshot.
The sun has been making a small appearance here and there but it is just not enough for me to ditch my cozy sweaters and wraps. I live in central California and it should be warmer by now. The lack of warmth has me painting my new project a sunny yellow. My etsy searches are full of words like “French”, “yellow” and “blue”. My pinterest searches have been mostly about fruit and positive sayings. I guess I will just have to be patient.
Anyhow, I have been doing a bit of spring cleaning around the house and am in the process of weeding through all my clothing. I have kept plenty of things that are out of style or do not fit because I keep thinking I will make something out of them. This sweater is a good example. I have been holding on to it for, well, I probably shouldn’t say…
This week I ripped the stitches out and cut it up. I made an infinity scarf of sorts. It isn’t a long one that you can double wrap; there just was not enough sweater to do that. I thought about combining another sweater or material with it but did not like anything mixed with it. Here is how it turned out.
Now I can be cozy without overheating and I do not have the sweater taking up room in my house anymore.
